How to measure a room for online interior design

Measure the room’s length, width and ceiling height, then record doors, windows and fixed features from a consistent corner. Use feet and inches, keep a simple sketch, and identify dimensions that are still unknown.

Start with a simple sketch

Draw the room’s outline and give each wall a label. A hand sketch is enough to organize your measurements. Mark the entrance, windows, built-ins and anything that cannot move. For an irregular room, break the outline into smaller sections rather than treating it as a rectangle.

Use a tape measure or suitable measuring device safely. Do not climb unsafely or enter inaccessible areas to obtain a dimension. Mark those dimensions as unknown and ask what is needed.

Record the room and its openings

Measure wall lengths and ceiling height where accessible. Record dimensions in feet and inches and label exactly what each number refers to. Recheck important dimensions; if two measurements disagree, keep the uncertainty visible rather than choosing the number you prefer.

  • Length and width, with wall labels
  • Ceiling height and any changes in height
  • Door and window width and height
  • Distances from openings to a consistent corner
  • Window sill height when relevant
  • Fixed cabinetry, radiators, columns and other obstacles

Measure the pieces that stay

For furniture you plan to keep, record width, depth and height. Note door swings and how people move through the room. Photograph the item as well so the designer can understand its form and condition.

Record relevant delivery constraints such as narrow entrances or stairs separately. A layout that fits the room does not by itself confirm that an item can be delivered through the building.

Be clear about what has been checked

In your project, dimensions have a source and review status. A customer-provided measurement and a designer-reviewed measurement are not the same as on-site verification. Photos and videos can help explain context, but they do not establish exact dimensions.

Before ordering fitted cabinetry or undertaking structural, plumbing or electrical changes, arrange the appropriate on-site verification and professional review. Our design plans are not stamped engineering or guaranteed permit-ready documents.
